2017 (July 16, 2017; 12 months ago ( 2017-07-16)), Available in English Website Family Tree Maker is for Windows and Mac that allows the researcher to keep track of information collected during research and to create reports, charts, and books containing that information. The software was originally developed by of Banner Blue Software, which was purchased by in 1995. It passed through the hands of, and others before coming under its current ownership. A redesigned Family Tree Maker 2008 was released on August 14, 2007. The 2009 version of the program corrected some of the errors and omissions of its predecessor, and introduced a few new features.
Family Tree Maker 2010 claimed to further enhance the radical re-design and be more powerful and feature-packed with faster navigation and quicker load times. A version for the Mac was released in 1997, but due to low market demand was discontinued for over a decade.
A new version of Family Tree Maker for Mac was released on November 4, 2010. Family Tree Maker Version 16 was awarded a in the 'Best Consumer Productivity Solution' category in 2006. On December 8, 2015, announced that it would discontinue Family Tree Maker. The announcement was met by fierce protest from Family Tree Maker users. On February 2, 2016, Ancestry.com announced that Software MacKiev, the company that had developed the Mac version of the software for more than six years, would acquire the Family Tree Maker brand, and take over the development and publishing of Mac and Windows editions. At the same time as this announcement, Software MacKiev promised free updates for owners of the then-current versions.
While the MacKiev dot-one versions were put on sale within 2 months, they were not officially released as free updates to the current versions until 30 Dec 2016. At that time, connectivity with Ancestry was also extended until its replacement could be rolled out. Ancestry connectivity, including TreeSync, the ability to synchronize a Family Tree Maker tree with one at Ancestry, was turned off on 29 Mar 2017, with its replacement, called FamilySync, to be turned on 31 Mar. The news about FamilySync contained a bit of a surprise: it would only be available in Family Tree Maker 2017, the next iteration of Family Tree Maker, which was to be released coincident with the deployment of FamilySync.
Users of Family Tree Maker 2 & 3 for Mac and 2012 & 2014 for Windows would no longer have any connectivity to Ancestry. If they wanted such connectivity, they would have to pay to upgrade to Family Tree Maker 2017, which was officially released on 16 July 2017, 107 days later than planned. The core functionality and user interface of Family Tree Maker 2017 have changed little since 2010. Software MacKiev touted four major improvements: 1. FamilySearch integration 2. FamilySync 3.
Color Coding 4. Photo Darkroom. FamilySearch integration provides potential matches to the FamilySearch.org Family Tree, but not to their vast record collections.
FamilySync is a replacement for Ancestry.com's TreeSync feature; it provides potential matches to family trees, indexes, and records at Ancestry.com. It was necessitated by Ancestry.com retiring their TreeSync Application Program Interface (API). While the old API was used exclusively by Ancestry.com, since they also owned Family Tree Maker, the new API is open to other software developers to use. Color Coding is a new feature that enables users to assign up to four different colors to a person and their ancestors. Photo Darkroom is a new feature that can darken faded black & white photos.

Generations was last updated long before Windows Vista or 7 were published therefore the operating system (OS) will be suspicious of the program due to its age. We can assure you that installing Generations on your computer will not corrupt anything on your operating system or adversely affect any other program.
1a) Vista users only After inserting the Generations program CD in your CD/DVD drive it is very likely the operating system will ask ‘An unidentified program wants to access your computer’. Click ‘Allow’. The program will open the ‘Install Shield Wizard’ window. 1b) Windows 7 users only After inserting the Generations program CD in your CD/DVD drive it is very likely the operating system will produce the following error: We’re sorry, you must be an administrator to run this program. Please log on as an administrator and try again. Click OK Click on the windows ‘Start’ button Click on the ‘Computer’ option 1a) Vista users only On the ‘Device with Removable Storage’ you should see the Generations ‘G’ logo with ‘DVD RW Drive (E:) GFT’ where ‘E’ or another letter is the drive letter allocated to your CD/DVD drive in which you have put your CD. Right click on the Generations Icon and a menu should appear.
Choose the second option ‘Install Generations Family Tree’. 1a) Vista users only A new window opens with the message: Do you want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this computer?
Program name: setup.exe Publisher: unknown File Origin: CD/DVD drive Click OK and the program will install the ‘InstallShield Wizard’ window 2) Vista & Windows 7 users Now follow the step by step instructions on the InstallShield program. Important We recommend creating a sub-folder called ‘Generations Data’ in your main ‘Documents’ folder for storing your data file/s. If you are a relative novice at file transfer and you are unsure where exactly your data files are stored then we also recommend doing the following before attempting to transfer and use your own data file on the new OS.
Allow your OS to Reveal the 3 Letter File Extension in Vista / Windows 7 When you are in any folder or click on the Window ‘Start’ button in the bottom left corner of your screen and then click ‘Documents’ in the right menu column. Click on ‘Organise’ in the menu options to reveal the drop down menu and choose ‘Folder and search Options’ Click on the ‘view’ tab and then un-tick the box next to ‘Hide extensions for known file types’ Click ‘Apply’ and ‘OK’ How to Find Files in Vista / Windows 7 Click on the Windows ‘Start’ button and click in the ‘Start programs and file search’ box. Type ‘.uds’ (without inverted commas) in the box and any files with this three letter extension should be listed above.
Right click on the file and click on ‘Open file location’ and you will be able to see the folders & subfolder path to where your data file is located. Navigating to Your Family Data in the Generations Program Finding your data once you have it in the Generations Data folder. When you first start Generations it will automatically look for your data in the program folder.

Vista/Windows 7 does not like user data to be stored here anymore so you will need to click on the ‘look in’ field selector button to navigate your way to the ‘Documents / Generations Data’ folder where you should find your family file/s ending in ‘.uds’. Click on the file and then click on open to see your data in the program. Unfortunately the option to set your family file as the default opening file no longer works within Generations. Instead we recommend creating a short cut to the family file you use the most.

To do this we will assume that you can open the file location as above in How to Find Files in Vista / Windows 7. Right click on the data file Click ‘Create Shortcut’ Drag the new shortcut onto your desktop. Whenever you click on the shortcut your computer knows to open that particular file in Generations as the ‘.uds’ file extension is only associated with that program Modifying the Generations Family Screen If you are using Vista or Windows 7 you are more than likely to have a much better screen resolution than the standard for windows 98 or XP. This means the screen will enlarge more than before but the text may appear rather small. Just click on the ‘Options’ menu and chose ‘Fonts’ to find the settings to increase the screen text size. Finally there is a patch available that cures a printing problem with colours in Generations. The patch was written for Windows XP but works equally well on Windows 7.

We have now (2011) sold our last copy of Generations as the publishers of this software have decided that they no longer want this to be available for sale. The good news is, existing owners of the program may continue using Generations even on Windows Vista and Windows 7. Click below for instructions.
If you were planning to use Generations for the first time I would definitely recommend that you look at rather than starting with such an old program as Generations Generations has been a brilliant piece of software for genealogists and in all probability may have been the best program available for a number of years. Other programs in the past have never quite been able to match it, in all of its functions. However the program has become increasing more difficult to support and has suffered interference from many other programs over the last five years. In addition to this the authors of a much newer program 'Family Historian have made a great effort to build into their program many of the best features from Generations and in our opinion have now come up with a product that is much better than Generations. We are confident in recommending as a replacement for Generations and it has received several awards for being the best software available for Family History and professional genealogists. Please take a look.
It handles images in a much better way than any other family tree program and almost has the complete functionality of your old program. The later versions look very much like the Generations program including images on the family screen. If you are ready to add photographs to your Generations database then changing to Family Historian is highly recommended as it is able to handle images in an extremely clever way. You may download a 30 day trial version of the new Family Historian and import a copy of the Gedcom file that Generations is able to produce from the file menu in your old program.
If you have an old Generations file and you are not able to open it or produce a gedcom file then we can do this for you for you. Have a play with your own data in Family Historian and see what you think. Testing with the trial will give you the opportunity to check how your source data transfers over.
